Nina Mala ( chakra totem 1)
2009
Mixed Media
about 3' tall
Painted sculpture made with found objects, including vinyl records, dried seahorses, magazine collage, and CDs. Upper part spins freely on lazy susan, and entire totel sits on a box which can be opened. Painted with acrylics and paint pens.

This piece uses original photography of my girlfriend, and is about the duality of a person's nature. The distinction between good and bad is called into question- as the totem/chakra spins, the two sides are blurred. The piece includes writing (an original poem and a traditional mariachi song.) The fact that the whole piece is a box allows the recipient of the piece to claim it as their own, and I was attracted to the fact that the box is lined with plastic on the inside and approximately big wnough to hold a human heart. All in all the piece is a gift and a tribute, as well as a commentary on the forces which balance to make up one personality.
