LOOKING ACROSS (a blues tune)
I'm on the edge of a precipice,
on the edge of a fall
on the edge of disaster, on a crumbling wall
And I see you there standing
with your face in the wind
and I try to build bridges
with the bricks of my sins.
When i look to the other side,
the chasm's emptiness is my confessional lattice.
When i look to your distracted eyes,
I find the blue truth.
And as that distance of stormy sighs
becomes ever more quiet,
my illusions are shattered,
my calls turn to goodbyes,
and I tumble for you.
Maybe the wind will change direction
and you'll turn on your own,
lashes alighting on your cheeks like songbirds
migrating away from the canyon I'm trying to span
or maybe someone will take your long fingers
put your trust in his hands,
because I was a dream,
and you dream of a man.
I'm on the edge of pure loneliness
on the brink of your smile
those sweet corners where happiness
made its home for a while.
and I fear the cold river
where the long drop will end,
far above me you'll walk away
and I'll drift from my friend.
